Family Picnic 3 Generations

Having fun with an old picture. 3 generations, Sarah Mitchell, Dolly Mitchell, and my grandmother  Ada Mitchell. You can spot them as they are the ones talking in the bubble, along with my grandmother Ada brother Howard.

Sarah Mitchell what I know about, read the bible as I have it and it’s basically falling apart. Sarah also had pictures of all of her children, along with her mother who also had pictures of her children. This has been extremely helpful with genealogy work. Putting a face to a name means everything and I certainly appreciate it.

This picture is among a few other pictures that showcase the family at picnics.

Guernsey Cow

One of my mother – Marie chores when she was a girl on the farm was to fetch the cows everyday for milking. Over the road from the farm were beautifully grassy hills. And she would climb the hills looking for the Guernsey Cows. She also picked the wild flowers along the way.

The Guernsey cow was a known for producing high butterfat, high protein milk with a distinct golden color.

I would expect nothing other than my grandparents always went after perfection in everything they did.

The Button Can

At Grandmas house, there was always that old can of buttons. Time stood still as we poured over, sifted and sorted, color and texture. Admiring the uniqueness, and claiming favorites. This was a simple joy that brought us together, a memory we shared and treasured.

Tomato Jam

My Grandmother Ada made tomato jam. It was green in color. the container was the size of used baby food jars sealed with paraffin wax. Everything my grandmother made was delicious. Why would this not be? I just couldn’t get myself to try it. This was a long time ago and I will never get a chance.

Washing clothes

I remember this washing machine – my grandmother Ada, had one identical to it. It had a white enamel round agitator and included a wringer that she put the clothes through. Grandma Ada was known in our family for her stain-removal skills. She employed various pastes and brushes, and then eventually, she finished by using a washboard.

When she was done washing all the clothes. Regardless of the Minnesota season, she would hang those clothes on the line outside.
